GSM: what fabric weight means (and why 600 GSM changes everything)
On streetwear product pages, you see "300 GSM", "450 GSM", "600 GSM" more and more. That number is one of the best indicators of how premium a garment feels. Here's what it means, and why it changes everything when you wear it.
What is GSM?
GSM stands for grams per square metre: the weight of the fabric in grams per square metre. The higher the number, the denser and thicker the fabric. Note: it's the weight of the fabric, not of the finished garment.
The benchmarks
| Fabric weight | Feel | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 140 to 180 GSM | Light, thin, slightly see-through | Basic t-shirt, fast fashion |
| 200 to 250 GSM | Decent, more opaque | Standard quality t-shirt |
| 280 to 350 GSM | Thick, structured, doesn't cling | Heavyweight streetwear t-shirt |
| 400 to 500 GSM | Heavy, warm, clean drape | Quality sweatshirt and hoodie |
| 600 GSM and up | Very heavy, dense, almost stiff at first | Premium hoodie, pieces built to last |
Why a high fabric weight changes everything
- The cut holds on its own. A heavy fabric keeps its shape: the shoulders stay square, the fabric doesn't cling or stretch out of shape. That's what gives the clean drape you want from an oversized fit.
- It lasts longer. A dense fabric wears more slowly, pills less and handles washing better.
- Opacity. No more see-through t-shirts: at 300 GSM, the fabric is properly opaque.
- The feel. You notice the difference as soon as you pick the piece up. It's often what makes a garment "feel premium".
Any downsides?
A heavy fabric is warmer, so a 600 GSM piece is mostly worn from autumn to spring. It can also feel a little stiff the first few times: it softens with wear and washing, and that's exactly what gives it character over time.
The SH4DE choice
For Drop 01, we chose heavyweight fabrics for both pieces:
- the SH4DE Zip Hoodie in 600 GSM, for a heavy, structured silhouette that holds up over time;
- the SH4DE T-Shirt in 300 GSM, thick without being stifling, made for everyday wear.
Both go through an acid wash treatment for that washed black. To keep it looking good for longer, follow our care tips.
